BBC Witness History

I produced and presented an edition of the long-running BBC World Service series “Witness History” – incidentally one of my favourite podcast series.

Operation Breakthrough was a remarkable event in the 1980s.  With the Cold War still in full swing, the US and Soviet militaries worked together to save three California Gray whales trapped in ice off the coast of the US state of Alaska. I spoke to Cindy Lowry, the Alaska representative for Greenpeace. She helped coordinate rescue efforts at the time and shared her memories with me.
